A coffee giant has shut one of its branches in a major city centre. Starbucks' branch in Fargate, Sheffield, has been in business for almost 20 years, opening in 2008.
A notice on the door reads: "Time to say goodbye. We are now closed." This means the company has only one branch remaining in the city, in Tudor Square, after the 2018 closure of its third branch in Orchard Square. Many people will be sad to see the popular coffeechain leave its premises. The most recent review, from September, said: "I've been coming here for over 17 years, four times a week. The staff are amazing. I wouldn't go anywhere else, nothing too much, and my coffee is always on point." Starbucksannounced in September that it would close a number of its company-owned UK stores. The chain said it would close sites where it has not been able to "create the physical environment customers" want, and where they are not sustainably profitable.

However, the coffee chain has said it is still on track to open 80 new Starbucks sites in the UK and is committed to the country.
As of March 2026, there were 1,367 Starbucks stores in the UK. The majority of these locations, approximately 84% or 1,153 stores, are in England, while there are 128 in Scotland and 49 in Wales.
At the same time, Starbucks announced it would close about 430 of its US stores, bringing the country's total to 18,734 by the end of 2025.
It also cut about 900 North American head office jobs in September, after cutting 1,100 corporate positions in February 2025.
This comes after Coca-Cola announced in January that it was abandoning plans to sell Costa Coffee, following bids that failed to meet expectations.
The company bought the UK's largest coffee chain in 2018 for £3.9 billion. When it was looking to sell Costa, Coca-Cola reportedly failed to find a buyer willing to pay more than £2 billion.
