India has reacted strongly to the attack on an Indian-flagged commercial ship off the coast of Oman. The Ministry of External Affairs strongly condemned the incident and said that targeting merchant ships and innocent seafarers plying on international sea routes is completely unacceptable.
What did the Foreign Ministry say in the statement issued?
The ministry clarified that such incidents disrupting maritime trade pose a serious threat not only to the regional but also to the global economy. In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, it was said that the attack on the Indian ship near Oman is extremely worrying and India strongly criticizes such violent activities. Expressing relief, the government said that all the Indian sailors present on the ship are safe. India also expressed its gratitude to the Oman administration for its help in the rescue operation.
India has appealed to the international community to take concrete steps to ensure maritime security and maintain freedom of navigation. The ministry said that targeting merchant ships and endangering the lives of civilian sailors is a violation of international laws. India reiterated that it is committed to increasing global cooperation on maritime security and adhering to international maritime rules.
Maritime trade is considered very important for India, because about 95 percent of the country’s trade happens through sea routes. The supply of petroleum products, food items, chemicals and other essential goods depends on these sea routes. In such a situation, any kind of attack or tension can have a major impact on the global supply chain and the Indian economy.
Surveillance increased in the area
According to sources, after the incident, the Indian Navy and Coast Guard have increased surveillance in the area. All Indian ships have been instructed to be extra cautious and strictly follow safety protocols. At the same time, the investigation into the nature of the attack and the elements involved behind it is ongoing.
In fact, since the air strikes launched by America and Israel against Iran on 28 February 2026 and the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, tension has reached its peak in the entire West Asia. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had warned ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. After this, incidents of attacks on many merchant ships came to light.
Indian sailors have already become targets in this crisis. On March 1, 2026, two Indian crew members were killed while three others were injured in the attack on oil tanker ‘Skylight’ near Khasab, Oman. Apart from this, Indian sailors were also affected in the attacks on ships named ‘MKD VYOM’ and ‘Ayeh’.
