Dewas: A typical Thursday morning turned into a scene of devastation as a massive explosion ripped through a firecracker factory near Tonkkala on AB Road in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh.
The blast, which occurred around 11:30 AM, was so powerful that it sent tremors felt kilometres away, leaving the local community in shock and mourning.
A Sudden Inferno
A sudden fire quickly escalated into a series of thunderous explosions as the flames reached stockpiles of gunpowder and finished firecrackers. Witnesses describe a sequence of terrifying events.
According to reports, three workers have been confirmed dead. Over 20 others have sustained severe burn injuries, with many fighting for their lives in critical care units.
The force of the blast was so violent that the factory's tin roofing sheets were launched into the air and landed hundreds of meters away on the highway.
Emergency Response
Local administration and emergency services arrived on the scene shortly after the first explosion.
Firefighting teams faced significant challenges as smaller blasts continued, making it dangerous to approach the main part of the facility.
The Dewas District Hospital was quickly overwhelmed as victims with varying degrees of burns were rushed in.
Due to the severity of the burns, at least seven individuals have already been referred to advanced medical facilities in Indore.
Surgeons and burn specialists have been put on high alert to handle the influx of patients, many of whom have suffered over 50% burns.
Questions Over Safety Measures
While the administration has launched a formal investigation, locals have alleged that the factory was operating with a blatant disregard for safety protocols.
Preliminary reports suggest that a large number of workers, many of them migrants from Bihar, were inside the facility at the time of the incident.
Collector and police senior officials remain at the site to oversee the rescue operations.
For now, the people of Dewas wait in silence, hoping for the recovery of the injured and demanding answers for the lives lost in the smoke.
