What Indian gardeners should plant before the first rains hit

In India, the pre-monsoon weeks are thought to be among the best planting seasons for gardeners. The soil is naturally warm because of the summer heat, and at the same time, there is an increase in humidity, along with the first drops of rain that help provide the perfect growing conditions for young plants and seedlings. From balconies, to terraces, or to any backyard kitchen gardens, all plants can start growing well before regular rainfall starts.

Why is the pre-monsoon planting season ideal?

Growing crops just before the first rains allows plants to establish better root structures before the soil gets wet. Additionally, there will be less frequent watering required since plants can make use of the first drops of rain, in addition to having warm temperatures. Many professional gardeners like to plant vegetables and flowers within two to four weeks prior to the monsoon season because it increases their chances of survival during the rainy season.

Bhindi

This is one of the most reliable and easy-to-grow vegetable plants in the Indian climate conditions, growing easily in hot and humid weather. Growing okra before monsoon will help the plant grow strong in preparation for the rains. Okra grows best in terrace gardens and in pots.

Gourds

There are four types of gourds, which include bottle gourd (lauki), bitter gourd (karela), ridge gourd, and sponge gourd that grow well in the rainy season. Plants of the gourd type should be grown before monsoon, and they thrive on support and sufficient sunshine.

Cucumbers

These plants grow well when there is warmth and moisture in the soil, making it essential for gardeners to sow cucumber seeds in preparation for the monsoons. They thrive well in balcony rail planters and grow bags.

Chillies and Brinjal

Brinjals and chillies have many health benefits, and their saplings should be raised before the onset of monsoon in the country as the plants grow well in the moist and moderate temperatures of the season.

Root crops

The radish, beetroot, carrot, and arbi (taro root) crop too could be sown just before monsoon on well-draining soil. The moistened soil helps roots form.

Leafy crops that can be grown before monsoon:-

Spinach (Palak)

Palak grows very fast in moist conditions and can be harvested many times. It is great for newbies and even grows well in shallow pots.

Fenugreek (Methi) and Amaranth

Methi happens to be very easy to grow and grows very fast in humid conditions. Many people plant it regularly every couple of weeks. Amaranth, on the other hand, is very resistant to Indian summer heat and flourishes after monsoon rains bring moisture.

Herbs to grow before the monsoons:

Coriander (Dhaniya)

The monsoon season is ideal for growing coriander, as the cool weather and abundant moisture promote healthy foliage production. Drainage is essential, as well as partial shading, which prevents fungal infection.

Mint

High humidity levels make mint plants develop at a quick pace, producing a strong fragrance due to the rains. It is recommended to grow mint plants individually since they spread fast.

Tulsi and basil

Tulsi grows easily during the monsoon seasons in India without requiring much care. Basil plants can also be grown without difficulty; however, they may need some protection during rainy periods to avoid leaves from rotting.
