health desk: If you start your day with a hot cup of coffee, then this habit can prove to be a boon for your brain. A recent and very long-term study has shockingly revealed that drinking two to three cups of coffee daily reduces the risk of dementia to a great extent. Its positive effects are most visible especially in people before the age of 75 years.
43 years long research
About 1.31 lakh nurses and healthcare professionals were included in this extensive study conducted in America. Researchers followed these participants for 43 years. The study results showed that people who regularly consumed moderate amounts of caffeine (250mg-300mg) were 35% less likely to develop dementia than those who did not consume caffeine.
How does coffee save the brain?
According to scientists, caffeine blocks a chemical called ‘adenosine’ in the brain, which slows down the activity of essential neurotransmitters like dopamine. Additionally, the antioxidants present in coffee and tea reduce brain inflammation and prevent the accumulation of harmful ‘amyloid plaques’ which are considered the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Research also shows that consumption of tea also provides protection to the brain.
Caution: Too much coffee does not mean much benefit
An important warning has also been given in the study. Researchers say that according to the ‘Yerkes-Dodson law’, caffeine improves mental performance only to a certain extent. Consuming too much caffeine can disrupt sleep and increase anxiety, which can be detrimental to brain health.
Additionally, a strange trend of faster memory loss was observed in those who drank ‘decaffeinated’ coffee. Experts believe that moderation is the biggest key. 2 to 3 cups of freshly brewed coffee daily can be the most effective way to keep the mind alert and protect against the diseases of old age.
