After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal regarding fuel saving due to the West Asia crisis, its effect is now visible at the administrative level as well. In this sequence, Delhi Police has made important changes in its functioning and shifted a large part of the meetings to virtual mode. Most of the meetings held at Delhi Police Headquarters (PHQ) are now being held online. Due to this, heads of remote districts and various units of Delhi do not have to travel to the headquarters again and again. Earlier, for these meetings, officers had to travel several kilometers to reach the headquarters, but now coordination and review meetings are being held through video conferencing only. This is not only saving time, but is also expected to reduce the fuel expenditure of government vehicles.
Saving time and manpower
Making a major change in its functioning, Delhi Police has shifted administrative meetings completely to digital mode. This step is not only saving fuel of vehicles but also saving time of escort vehicles, drivers and security personnel. The daily law and order review, crime meetings and inter-departmental coordination meetings held at the PHQ are now being held mostly on virtual platforms. Due to this, senior officers and district level officers do not have to come to the headquarters again and again. According to officials, personal attendance has been made mandatory only in extremely sensitive or confidential matters, while all other regular meetings are being held through digital medium only.
Under the new system, the number of vehicles included in the security convoy during VIP movement has been limited. Earlier, large convoys would include several additional vehicles, but now only essential security vehicles will be deployed. Apart from this, PHQ has also given instructions to make the operation of PCR vans and patrol vehicles used at the police station level like gypsy and motorcycles more targeted and need based. Now these vehicles will be actively deployed only in sensitive areas and hotspots. Officials have also clarified that police vehicles will not be used for personal purposes under any circumstances. All personnel have been instructed to ensure responsible use of resources and follow discipline.
Use of electric vehicles in patrolling also
Now electric scooters and ‘e-pods’ (three-wheeler electric vehicles) are being used for patrolling in crowded areas. According to officials attached to PHQ, these vehicles were first introduced during the G20 summit, after which their use was gradually incorporated into regular patrolling. Now patrolling is being done with these electric vehicles especially in Central Delhi, Connaught Place, India Gate and other historical and crowded areas. These scooters and e-pods have modern features like sirens, loudspeakers, public address system (PA system) and technologies like GPS tracking.
CM Rekha Gupta also made big announcements
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal regarding fuel saving and economy, now CM Rekha Gupta has also taken a big step at the government level. The Chief Minister has announced to limit the number of government vehicles used by ministers, MLAs and other public representatives. While posting on the social media platform ‘X’, CM Gupta said that in view of the current global circumstances, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon the countrymen to save petrol and diesel and make energy conservation a mass movement. Imbibing this sentiment, Delhi Government has taken this decision. He said that now vehicles will be used for departmental work only as per requirement and at minimum level. Along with this, emphasis has been laid on giving priority to carpooling and public transport. The Chief Minister also made it clear that he himself, all his cabinet colleagues, BJP MLAs, public representatives, government officials and departments will now use shared transport and limited vehicles as much as possible.
