New Delhi, 13 May. Taking a major decision amid rising operating costs and airspace restrictions, the country’s largest airline Air India has announced to cut about 100 weekly international flights and temporarily close services on seven routes.
Services on these routes will be temporarily closed
The airline has said that this cut will be applicable from June to August 2026. This decision will reduce Air India’s international capacity by about 27 percent. Among the seven routes on which the airline has decided to stop flying till August, Delhi–Chicago, Delhi–New York, Mumbai–New York City, Delhi–Shanghai, Chennai–Singapore, Mumbai–Dhaka and Delhi-Male. Air routes are included.
This is the real reason for the cut
According to Air India, restrictions continue on the airspace of many countries due to the West Asia conflict. Taking long routes increases fuel consumption. Jet fuel prices for international operations are at record levels. The airline also said that it has become difficult to operate many international services commercially under the current circumstances.
The number of flights to these cities will be reduced during June-August
- Delhi to San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver, Paris, Copenhagen, Milan, Vienna, Zurich and Rome.
- Delhi to Melbourne, Sydney, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Kathmandu, Dhaka and Colombo.
- Flights from Mumbai to Singapore, Bangkok and Colombo will also be reduced.
- However, the number of flights on the Mumbai-New York route will be increased.
If the current situation continues, further changes in the network are possible.
The airline has said that if the current situation continues, further changes can be made in the network. The airline’s CEO and MD Campbell Wilson had already warned the employees that the airline was going through tough times due to rising fuel prices, closure of Pakistan airspace and Iran war. For this reason, the company has also taken steps like stopping the annual salary increase of employees, reducing unnecessary expenses and reducing costs.
