According to scientists, Gamma-Ray Bursts i.e. GRBs are among the most powerful and mysterious events in the universe. When these explosions occur, within a few seconds more energy is released than our Sun releases in its entire lifetime. This is the reason why it is considered the biggest explosion in space. Astronomers have been trying to understand these mysterious phenomena for many decades.
Such incidents happen every day
Scientists say that almost every day a gamma-ray burst occurs in some part of the universe. Although these events occur millions of light years away from Earth, their brightness is so high that modern telescopes and satellites can easily capture them. These explosions have created new curiosity in the world of space science.
First detected in 1970
The first indications of gamma-ray bursts were found in the 1970s. At that time, some American satellites were sent into space to monitor nuclear tests. But suddenly scientists started receiving signals of extremely strong gamma rays from space. Initially scientists themselves could not understand where this energy was coming from. Later, through research, it was found that these explosions are very distant events in space.
What are gamma-ray bursts?
Gamma-ray bursts are considered to be of two types. The first is a short gamma-ray burst. These explosions last less than two seconds. According to scientists, these occur when two neutron stars collide with each other or a neutron star gets absorbed into a black hole. After the collision, extremely powerful energy is produced and a new black hole is formed.
The second type is long GRBs.
Long gamma-ray bursts, on the other hand, last longer than two seconds and sometimes last for almost a minute. These are associated with the death of giant stars. When a very massive star runs out of fuel, its center begins to collapse under the pressure of its own gravity. After this a black hole is formed there and a massive explosion occurs.
How are dangerous rays produced?
According to scientists, when a new black hole is formed, it releases very high-speed jets in both directions. These jets move close to the speed of light. When they collide with the surrounding gas and dust, dangerous gamma rays are produced. These rays reach the earth and scientists record them. The level of energy in this process is so high that even scientists are surprised.
Information is obtained from Afterglow
After these explosions a glow is created which is called aftermath. This glow starts with gamma rays and extends to X-rays, visible light, infrared and radio waves. Scientists continue to study this glow for days and sometimes years. Through this they get important information about black holes, neutron stars and other phenomena in space.
Explosions revealing the secrets of black holes
Gamma-ray bursts are not just explosions, but they have also become the biggest laboratory of space for scientists. With their help, scientists are trying to understand the process of formation of black holes, the death of giant stars and the early stages of the universe. Many scientists believe that if GRBs are fully understood, many big mysteries of the universe can be revealed.
Is there a threat to the earth too?
Scientists believe that if ever a huge gamma-ray burst occurs near our galaxy, it can affect the Earth as well. Its energy can harm the Earth’s atmosphere. However, at present there is no such danger because most GRBs are millions of light years away from us. Still, scientists are constantly keeping an eye on them.
Big discoveries are being made through new technology
Today many big space organizations of the world like NASA and European Space Agency are studying gamma-ray bursts with the help of modern telescopes and satellites. Due to new technologies, scientists are now able to capture these explosions with greater speed and accuracy than before. More shocking information to this may emerge in the coming times.
There are still many questions left
Although scientists have gained a lot of information about gamma-ray bursts, many questions still remain unanswered. Why are these explosions so powerful? What actually happens when a black hole is formed? Are they also to the beginning of the universe? Many such mysteries are still confusing scientists and research is going on all over the world to solve them.
