Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday (13 May 2026) made it clear that he will retain the Bhawanipur assembly seat and resign from the Nandigram seat.

Suvendu Adhikari’s announcement

According to media reports, BJP leader and new Chief Minister of West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari recently said, “I cannot take oath as MLA from two places. I have taken oath as MLA from Bhawanipur. Therefore, I will have to leave the Nandigram assembly seat.”

New MLA of Nandigram will be elected from by-election

Suvendu Adhikari had won both Bhawanipur and Nandigram seats in the recently held assembly elections. But on Wednesday he took oath as MLA from Bhawanipur in the state assembly. He said that now there will be a by-election in Nandigram and a new MLA will be elected from there.

Assured to keep promises to the people of Nandigram

With the decision to leave the seat, the officer gave assurance to the people of Nandigram. He said that all development promises will be fulfilled. Speaking to reporters outside the Bengal Assembly, he said, “I will not let the people of Nandigram feel my absence in the next five years. I will fulfill all the development promises made to Nandigram along with the entire state.”

This happened in Tamil Nadu also

It is noteworthy that Suvendu Adhikari gave the example of Tamil Nadu. There TVK chief and current Chief Minister Vijay contested elections from Perambur and Trichy East and won both the places. As per the rules, he gave up the Trichy East seat and retained Perambur.

Officer’s message to the people of Nandigram

It is noteworthy that Suvendu Adhikari has announced to leave Nandigram seat. However, he gave a clear assurance that he would never let the people of Nandigram in his home district East Medinipur feel that they have been distanced from them. An official said that even before when he was not the MLA there, he had maintained constant contact with the people of the area.

He said that in the coming times, all the election promises made to the people of Nandigram will be fulfilled soon.
