Oslo. Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Norway, Norway’s former Environment Minister and former head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Erik Solheim, has heaped praise on him. Calling PM Modi the world’s most popular democratic leader, Solheim said Western leaders have much to learn from his “green growth” policy.
In an article published in the prestigious Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv, Erik Solheim stated that Prime Minister Modi’s model of reconciling environment and development is inspiring to the entire world. He urged the Prime Ministers of the Nordic countries to listen seriously to PM Modi’s views.
Solheim wrote that no leader in any major country enjoys as much support and love within their own country as Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that PM Modi’s popularity is close to 70 percent, placing him among the world’s most influential leaders. He also described PM Modi’s journey from a humble background to the highest office in the country as extraordinary. Solheim wrote that Modi built his life and political career on the strength of his hard work and leadership abilities.
Erik Solheim praised India’s rapid economic progress, stating that the Indian economy is growing at a rate of approximately 7 percent, which is better than many major economies, including China. He stated that if growth continues at this pace, India could become the world’s second-largest economy by 2050. Solheim also praised the country’s infrastructure development under the Modi government as remarkable.
