New Delhi.Whenever Dharmendra of Bollywood is remembered, the image of a strong, courageous and action hero comes to the fore. But very few people know that the biggest contribution in changing his image and making him a romantic star has been made by the late singer (Mohammed Rafi).

Mohammad Rafi sang not just one or two but about 119 songs for Dharmendra. This series started with the 1961 film Shola Aur Shabnam and continued till the 1980s. These songs included about 60 solo and 59 duet songs. Rafi’s voice gave that emotional depth to Dharmendra’s characters, which made a special place for him in the hearts of the audience.

It is often said in the film world that musicians played an important role in giving Dharmendra the status of a romantic hero, but the real magic was created by the musician duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Mohammed Rafi together. The pair composed more than 50 songs for Dharmendra, of which Pratigya’s famous song “Main Jatt Yamla Pagla Deewana” is still very popular.

Apart from this, when Rafi sang songs like “Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe” in Madan Mohan’s music, Dharmendra’s romantic image got further enhanced. This was the same period when along with action films, Dharmendra also started being seen as a soft romantic hero.

Dharmendra himself had said in an interview that when Rafi used to sing for him, he felt as if he himself was singing. This emotion only made his on-screen performance more real.

The duo of Rafi and Dharmendra gave many memorable songs to Hindi cinema. Songs like “Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Pukara Hoga” from Haqiqat, “Aaj Mausam Bada Beimaan Hai” from Loafer and “Sukh Ke Sab Saathi” from Do Raaste are still included in people’s playlists.
