South Indian cuisine is synonymous with diversity, bold flavours, and rich culinary heritage, making it one of the most beloved foods. From crispy dosas, fluffy idlis, and spicy sambar to tangy rasam, uttapam, appam, pongal, and flavourful biryanis, the region offers a lip-smacking variety of iconic dishes, making it hard for you to choose. However, for people from other states or international travellers, navigating South Indian food can feel overwhelming due to unfamiliar dish names, unique eating styles, regional ingredients, and distinct flavour combinations.

Food influencer confused by South Indian food

So, when popular food influencer Kent Burris visited the iconic South Indian restaurant, Saravana Bhavan in Texas, he faced an almost similar situation. Burris posted a video on Instagram where he shared his gastronomical journey on Instagram.

Skimming the menu thoroughly, Kent Burris admitted that he had absolutely no idea what to order, but eventually picked out a millet onion masala dosa, a thali meal with puri and pongal, rice cooked in boiling milk. ‘I do not know what I am doing,’ he admitted in the clip. When the food arrived, Burris was even more confused, as he was unaware of how to eat the dishes.

That’s when a waiter stepped in to help the food influencer. He was kind enough to walk Kent Burris through each dish, offering detailed guidance on how to enjoy the traditional meal properly. She suggested beginning with the pongal, pairing it with chutney and sambar, while also explaining the best way to approach the thali by combining puri with the accompanying curries and sampling the rice alongside the various sides. Her thoughtful assistance helped transform what initially seemed like an intimidating culinary experience into an enjoyable one.

Waiter comes to the rescue

A particularly entertaining moment unfolded when Kent Burris was presented with his large masala dosa. Clearly fascinated yet puzzled by its impressive size and triangular shape, he humorously questioned what exactly had arrived at his table. Still unsure, he once again sought the waiter’s advice, asking how to properly eat the oversized ‘triangle,’ which quickly became one of the most amusing highlights of his food adventure.

As Kent Burris began tasting the dishes, he appeared pleasantly surprised by the distinguished flavours. He praised the pongal, sampled multiple curries with his puri, and continued expressing admiration for the meal. Carefully navigating the dosa, he experimented with each bite and openly embraced the learning process.

His curiosity continued as Kent Burris tried the masala filling inside the dosa. By the end of the video, Burris invited viewers to share feedback on his South Indian dining etiquette, adding a relatable and light-hearted touch to his viral culinary exploration.
