Chennai. There was a big political turn in the politics of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday when Chief Minister Joseph Vijay had to back out from his own decision. The controversy that started over the appointment of astrologer Pandit Ricky Radha Vetrivel to the post of Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Chief Minister’s Office grew so much that the government canceled the order within just 24 hours.

The appointment of Ricky Radha was approved by the government on Tuesday. It was told that he is considered close to Chief Minister Vijay and has also been his spiritual advisor or astrologer for a long time. But as soon as the news of the appointment came out, debate started in political circles. Especially the allies supporting the TVK government openly expressed their displeasure over this decision.
Allies raised questions
Parties like VCK, CPI and CPM said the government should promote scientific thinking and logic-based politics and not take steps that promote superstition. Before the floor test in the Assembly, VCK MLA Vani Arasu clearly said that the government should adopt a “scientific approach” and keep distance from things like astrology. At the same time, leaders of left parties also targeted the government. He said that appointments to government posts should be based on merit and administrative needs and not because of personal beliefs. CPI and CPM leaders called it a decision giving a wrong message.

After the controversy escalated, government minister Nirmal Kumar gave clarification and said that Ricky Radha had already been the spokesperson of the party, hence he was appointed. He also said that a person’s personal profession does not determine his government responsibilities. But amidst constant pressure from the opposition and allies, the government could not stick to its decision for long. In a letter issued by the Principal Secretary on Wednesday, the order to cancel the appointment of Ricky Radha was issued.
The opposition taunted – “Those who tell the future of others, have not been able to see their own future.”
The opposition also got a chance to attack the government regarding this entire matter. AIADMK MP IS Enabadurai sarcastically said, “Those who predict the future of others have not been able to see their own future.” He called it a sign of initial political uneasiness of the Vijay government. There is now talk in political circles that Chief Minister Vijay has been taking Ricky Radha’s advice in his personal decisions. It has already come to light that his opinion was sought regarding the time and date of swearing in. Not only this, Ricky Radha had predicted a big victory for Vijay and his party a year before the elections, after which he came into limelight.
