Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has passed the majority test held in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday. 144 votes were cast in his favor. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MLAs have boycotted voting. Vijay did not have the support of 118 MLAs before forming the government. He was laying claim to form the government. He had to go after Governor Rajendra Arlekar four times to stake claim. Now he has the support of 144 MLAs.

Despite opposition from All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, his party’s MLAs cross-voted and voted in favor of Vijay.

AIADMK leaders CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani voted in favor of Vijay. There was uproar in the House during voting. Vijay had met the AIADMK MLAs of the rebel group on Tuesday itself.

How many votes were cast in favor of Vijay in the House?

Apart from 105 TVK MLAs, Vijay got the support of 5 Congress MLAs, 2 CPI, 2 CPI(M), 2 IUML, 2 VCK, 1 AMMK and 25 MLAs from the rebel faction of AIADMK. When AIADMK MLAs were seen standing in the House in support of Vijay, the faction led by Palaniswami created a ruckus. Despite his unwillingness, Vijay got enough votes. Now, if only the rebel MLAs of AIADMK stay together and all the MLAs of other parties withdraw their hands from Vijay, then the government will still be safe.

How did Vijay dominate the floor test?

CPI, CPI(M), VCK, IUML and also expelled AMMK MLA had already given their support to Vijay. Vijay’s vote further increased with the arrival of 25 rebel AIDMK MLAs. Earlier Vijay’s government was facing the fear of minority, now because of this alliance formed after the elections, the path to Vijay has become easier.
