A major upheaval was seen in the politics of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday (May 13). Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay easily won the trust vote in the Assembly. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, 144 MLAs voted in favor of the Vijay government, while the support of 118 MLAs was needed for majority. During this period, the MLAs of AIADMK, which was considered a strong opposition party, were seen in trouble.
However, during the trust vote, the seats of the opposition parties were seen almost vacant. MLAs from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) walked out of the House. Whereas four MLAs of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and one MLA of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not participate in the voting.
The biggest discussion during the trust vote was about the open rebellion in All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The faction led by leaders Shanmugam and SP Velumani, considered “rebels” within the party, supported the Vijay government. This group is said to have the support of about 30 out of 47 AIADMK MLAs.
If seen numerically, at least 25 AIADMK MLAs voted in favor of Chief Minister Vijay. Vijay already had the support of 120 MLAs, although one of them was barred by the Madras High Court from taking part in the trust vote. This was the same MLA who had won the last election by a margin of only one vote.
Following the walkout by DMK and its allies, the number of MLAs present and voting in the House reduced. In such a situation, only 22 MLAs of the EPS faction could vote against the Vijay government.
After the end of the trust vote, the biggest question being raised in Tamil Nadu politics is the internal crisis of AIADMK. Ignoring the instructions of party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS), 25 MLAs took a different stand and supported the Vijay government.
This development has indicated that the balance of power within the AIADMK is changing rapidly. Political analysts believe that after this rebellion, the influence of EPS in the party has weakened, because now only 22 MLAs are seen left in their camp.
