Increase your energy and soothe joint pain—that’s what the experts say.

We regularly test out supportive footwear to give you first-hand feedback. I’ve even gone so far as to implement a “no barefoot” policy at home based on countless pieces of advice I’ve received from podiatrists. So when Oofos launched a new line—the Essentials Ooahh Plus—earlier this year, I was eager to get my hands on a pair. I haven’t looked back since.

Whether you’re an avid exerciser training for a race or your days are spent mostly on your feet, you’re likely familiar with the relief your feet feel when you slip into a pair of recovery shoes or slippers at home. The right pair has the potential to breathe new life into your evening routine. So when the folks at Oofos were kind enough to send me this new slide to test, I couldn’t wait to see if the shoes delivered.

This new line has more Oofoam (six millimeters to be exact) than the original OOahh line, so each pair can absorb more impact. Also, the strap is wider, the arch is elevated and the heel cup cradles the foot—all for extra stability. I happen to have high arches, so the new design piqued my interest.

Once they arrived, I wore them around the house for a few days, then asked my favorite fitness trainer friend, A.K. Hudsonto test them out. Her weekly routine puts far more strain on her feet and legs than my desk job does: She teaches pilates and strength and conditioning most days of the week. If that wasn’t qualifying enough, she’s on her feet in the hospital training to be a nurse one day a week, and almost every morning, she begins her day with her own workout or a run.

When I asked her for feedback, this is what she said: “These Oofos increase my energy when I am feeling fatigued. I didn’t realize they were working until I was so zapped one day and I came home and put them on, and then I was like, ‘Oh, I can get everything done now.’” She also pointed out that they take away her joint pain.

Podiatrists agree—Oofos make for a great house shoe: “Oofos Oofoam technology absorbs up to 37% more shock than traditional footwear, which will reduce shock transmitted into joints,” says Anne Sharkey, D.P.M., FACFASfounder of Solely Podiatry. “Oofos shoes also promote natural foot motion. They are perfect for at-home use instead of being barefoot.”

And perhaps the best endorsement of them all: Hudson said she’d definitely purchase a second pair of these Oofos when this pair wears out. Good news for me because I was looking to get my pair back for my own recovery days.

If this pair of Oofos isn’t your first choice, check out one of the pairs of house shoes and slippers below. I’ve personally tested each pair and highly recommend them, too.
