Prime Minister Narendra Modi has scaled down the size of his official convoy as part of a broader push towards austerity, just days after urging citizens to cut down on fuel consumption.
According to official sources, the reduced convoy was implemented during his recent domestic visits, including trips to Gujarat and Assam, following his address in Hyderabad.
The downsizing has been carried out without compromising essential security arrangements, in line with Special Protection Group (SPG) protocols.
Sources also indicated that the prime minister has encouraged the inclusion of electric vehicles in his convoy wherever feasible, without making additional purchases.
The move comes amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, which have impacted global energy markets. During a rally organised by the Telangana BJP in Hyderabad, Modi called for a series of austerity measures aimed at conserving foreign exchange.
These included reducing petrol and diesel usage, opting for metro rail services in urban areas, promoting carpooling, increasing the use of electric vehicles, shifting parcel movement to railways, and encouraging work-from-home practices where possible.
