GB News came to a halt for a breaking announcement as Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy spoke out. The alert comes as Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces the biggest leadership crisis of his premiership following Labour's devastating defeat in the local elections. Several cabinet ministers have called for Sir Keir to set out a timetable for his resignation, with government aides even quitting their posts, while around 100 Labour MPs have urged him not to give up.
GB News host Tom Harwood described it as a "tumultuous day on Downing Street" as he revealed that Lammy has publicly voiced his support for Sir Keir. He told viewers: "Most recently, the Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy rushed up to us journalists here on Downing Street to deliver this statement to his colleagues."
A clip was then played of Lammy defending Sir Keir, saying: "He has my full support. What I'd say to colleagues is, let's just step back, take a breath, let's remember that we have the King's speech.
"We are in government to do a job of work. It's been 24 hours now and nobody has come forward to put themself forward in the processes that exist in the party. No one seems to have the names to stand up against Keir Starmer and for those who are suggesting that he should stand down, they should say which candidate would be better.
He added: "Let's get on with the business of running this country and government. That's what I've been doing today, that's what the prime minister's been doing."
Harwood commented: "The deputy prime minister speaking perhaps on behalf of the prime minister, echoing the sentiment that we heard earlier which could be summed up by a quote from John Major from the 1990s, 'Put up, or shut up.'
"David Lammy was saying if people really want the prime minister to go, they've got to declare who they would want instead.
"That's how the Labour Party electoral system for electing a new leader works. They have to declare which candidate they would like to replace Keir Starmer and a formal contest would get going if 81 MPs backed a specific candidate."
The presenter went on to claim that all eyes are now on Health Secretary Wes Streeting after several of his closest colleagues in parliament resigned from their posts.
"Several of his closest friends in parliament are those who have said the prime minister must go. Could it be that the health secretary is preparing to launch a leadership contest? While the coming hours and days will be crucial in terms of watching what Wes Streeting does next," he added.
