A gastropub on a busy high street in a historic UK city has announced the closure of one of its locations. The Beech House, part of Upham Inns and based on St Peter's Street in St Albans, will close after its final lunch service on Sunday (May 17) "after many wonderful years".

The decision was announced with a message shared on Facebook which read: "After many wonderful years, it is with sadness that we announce we will be permanently closing our doors on Sunday, 17 May following lunch service." The message, however, also explained how other venues belonging to the Upham group will remain open and continue to operate as usual. The Beech House message also read: "We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our incredible team and to all of our guests for your loyalty and support over the years. It has been a pleasure to welcome you.

"While this chapter comes to an end, our other venues within the Upham family remain open and continue to operate as usual. Our nearest Upham pub is The Red Lion, Leighton Buzzard Road, Water End."

The restaurant opened in 2014. It became popular serving comfort food, roast dinners, brunch, and cocktails.

As explained by its website, the Upham Inn group "developed and nurtured a small collection of premium pubs with rooms in destination countryside locations across the South of England.

"Our pubs are homely and characterful, with menus celebrating the best of fresh and seasonal countryside cooking. Relax in our beautiful gardens and terraces on a summers day or enjoy our cosy warmth of roaring fires on a winters evening."

The locations of its pubs include "some of the most desirable locations to visit across Southern England, from the South Downs to the New Forest, from Windsor to Winchester to Warminster," the website also read.

Menus also celebrate "the best of fresh and seasonal countryside cooking".

Upham Inn has been contacted for comment.
