Jet2 has launched two brand new flight routes connecting the UK with the historic Spanish city of Girona giving travellers more options to visit one of Catalonia's most iconic destinations. The airline will introduce new services from London Gatwick and Edinburgh to Girona-Costa Brava Airport as part of its expanding summer schedule. Flights from Gatwick will run three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays while the Edinburgh route will operate every Sunday.
Located in northeastern Spain, Girona is well known for its colourful riverside houses, medieval streets of the Old Quarter and a fascinating mix of architectural styles with visitors able to explore Roman, Carolingian, Moorish, Gothic, Baroque and Modernist buildings across the city. The city has become increasingly popular with visitors looking for a quieter alternative to Barcelona, which is just 40 minutes away by train, while still offering easy access to the beaches and the seaside towns of Costa Brava.
The addition of Gatwick means Girona Airport now has five direct links with London.
The Edinburgh service also marks the return of a direct connection between the Scottish capital and Girona after previous operations by Ryanair and Jet2 ended a few years ago.
Girona-Costa Brava Airport now serves 48 destinations across 15 countries and has added five new routes this season, including Bucharest, Luxembourg and Palma de Mallorca.
A spokesperson for airport operator, Aena (Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea), said: "The connection with European capitals and the Brexit zone is consolidating, contributing to positioning the airport as a strategic gateway in its entire area of influence."
Jet 2 describes Girona as a "Catalan classic with plenty of personality."
The airline added: "Get ready to explore hidden treasures within medieval walls and gorge on gourmet treats. A warren of cobbled lanes makes up the old Jewish Quarter and a beautiful Baroque cathedral towers over the central square, where the Flower Festival is held every May.
"Add to that popular cycling routes, arcaded houses hanging over the river, a bridge designed by the Eiffel Tower's creator and quirky museums, and you've got yourself a cracking city.
"And from casual cafés serving simple pintxos to splash-the-cash fine dining marvels, this 'mini Barcelona' buzzes around its food, so bring your appetite."
