Bonnie Tyler remains in intensive care in Portugal after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest while doctors attempted to bring her out of an induced coma. The 74-year-old singer is said to have been hospitalised following emergency surgery for a burst appendix after falling seriously ill while staying at her home in the Algarve.

According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, Bonnie suffered a major setback late last week when medics tried to wake her from the medically induced coma. Reports claim she had to be resuscitated after going into cardiac arrest. The Total Eclipse of the Heart star is understood to still be receiving treatment at Faro Hospital, where doctors are reportedly trying to control a severe infection caused by a perforated intestine.

A spokesperson for Bonnie previously confirmed she had undergone emergency intestinal surgery after being admitted to hospital in Faro. They said: "The surgery went well and she is now recuperating."

The singer's longtime friend Liberto Mealha has since shared an update with Good Morning Britain, revealling he's been checking in with her every day. He said, "I could not see her because, you know, she's in intensive care. Well, we are praying for, get a better news. The doctors, they are positive, you know, with the situation. Yeah, but so far, you know, so far, it's not been good."

He previously explained that Bonnie had "started feeling unwell during a concert in London and went to a doctor for tests, but they didn't detect anything there". He added, "She decided to travel to the Algarve, where she began to feel severe abdominal pain."

According to Mealha, Bonnie later attended a private hospital before being urgently transferred to Faro Hospital after doctors discovered her appendix had burst.

The singer is believed to have been bedridden for two days at home before her husband, Robert Sullivan, took her for medical treatment. Mealha said Bonnie's husband has remained by her bedside throughout the ordeal and praised the care she has received in Portugal.

He added doctors remain "positive" that the singer can make a full recovery despite the seriousness of the situation. Reports suggest she had continued working in the weeks before her hospitalisation despite suffering persistent pain.

Her representatives have not publicly commented on the claims surrounding the reported cardiac arrest.
