Whenever a single track branches out into multiple lines—such as near a junction or station approach—a Home Signal is installed approximately 300 meters prior to that point. It is this signal that instructs the loco pilot on which specific track to proceed. Additionally, it indicates which line within the station premises the train should be guided onto to ensure a safe arrival.
How the Loco Pilot Selects the Correct Track
It is worth noting that while operating the train, the loco pilot keeps a constant watch on the signals positioned ahead. Through these signals, they receive advance information regarding the specific direction in which the train needs to proceed. It is for this reason that the train remains on the correct track, ensuring a safe and secure journey.
Every Train Has Two Loco Pilots
In the majority of Indian Railways trains, two personnel are present in the locomotive cabin: one Loco Pilot and one Assistant Loco Pilot. If the primary Loco Pilot experiences fatigue or encounters any difficulties for any reason, the Assistant Loco Pilot steps in to take charge of the responsibilities.
