The UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) has urged employers to ensure proper accommodation for workers as temperatures begin rising ahead of the summer season. The ministry said decent living conditions are important for worker wellbeing, workplace stability and business continuity.

In an awareness campaign launched under the theme “Decent Accommodation… A Stable Work Environment”, the ministry said labour accommodation standards are a shared responsibility and not just a regulatory requirement, according to a Gulf News report.

Calls for registered and well-maintained accommodation

The ministry asked companies to ensure that all labour accommodation facilities are officially registered and approved within MOHRE systems. It also directed employers to regularly update worker data for better oversight and compliance monitoring.

MOHRE stressed the need for regular maintenance of facilities and utilities to maintain safe and healthy living conditions. It said accommodation standards directly affect workers’ physical wellbeing and quality of life.

The ministry also encouraged employers to provide essential services within labour camps and accommodation facilities, including cooled drinking water, safe storage spaces and internet access for communication and digital services.

Focus on safety, awareness and worker wellbeing

As part of the campaign, MOHRE recommended promoting educational and awareness programmes within worker accommodations through dedicated screens and informational materials designed for labourers.

The ministry also highlighted the need for stronger safety and security systems at accommodation sites, including surveillance cameras and security guards, to create a secure residential environment.

In addition, employers were advised to appoint supervisors to manage accommodation facilities and respond to workers’ daily needs.

According to MOHRE, as reported by Gulf News, proper labour accommodation improves worker wellbeing and supports a stable and productive work environment, while also strengthening the UAE’s labour welfare standards and long-term economic growth.
