The way Indian cooks and mothers prepare food is not limited to taste alone, but is based on the ancient principles of Ayurveda. Even if unknowingly, our mothers have been following such rules for years which keep us away from diseases. As per ‘Live Hindustan’ report, these are the 8 Ayurvedic lessons which are a part of every Indian household:

1. Turmeric Milk: Natural Antibiotic

In case of minor injury or cold, the first thing the mother gives is ‘turmeric milk’. Turmeric has been called ‘Haridra’ in Ayurveda, which helps fight infections and heal wounds due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

2. Water kept in a copper vessel

Even today in many homes, water is kept in a copper jug or pot overnight and it is drunk in the morning on an empty stomach. According to Ayurveda, copper purifies water and helps balance the three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha) of the body.

3. Not drinking water with meals

Mothers often advise not to drink too much water while eating. Ayurveda says that drinking water during meals dims the ‘jathraagni’ (digestion fire), thereby slowing down digestion. It is considered best to drink water 30 minutes before or after eating.

4. Right Mixture of Spices (Tadka)

The seasoning of cumin, asafoetida, celery and mustard in the vegetable is not just for aroma.

  • Asafoetida and cumin: Help prevent gas and indigestion.

  • Celery: Helps in digesting heavy food.

5. Eating while sitting on the ground

Nowadays, dining table is in trend, but mother always advises to eat sitting cross-legged on the floor (Sukhasana). Sitting in this posture provides peace to the brain and the digestive system works better.

6. Ritucharya (eating habits according to season)

Mango Pana or Sattu in summer and Gum Laddu or Til-Jaggery in winter – our mothers change the menu as the seasons change. This is the ‘Ritucharya’ principle of Ayurveda, which keeps the body friendly to the environment.

7. Light meal after sunset

Elders always say that dinner should be light and should be eaten at least 2-3 hours before sleeping. According to Ayurveda, after the sun sets, our digestive power becomes weak, hence heavy food can produce toxins (Aava) in the body.

8. Balanced use of ghee

Putting a spoonful of desi ghee on top of the dal is not only mother’s love, but it is also an important rule of Ayurveda. Cow ghee helps in improving memory, lubrication of joints and strengthening the immunity of the body.
