Elon Musk is reportedly expected to join the United States delegation during Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to China, according to multiple media reports linked to preparations for the high-level summit between Washington and Beijing.
However, as of Monday, neither the White House nor Elon Musk has officially confirmed his participation in the delegation.
Reports surrounding the planned May 14–15 Beijing summit indicate that the Trump administration is preparing a smaller group of American business leaders and technology executives for the visit compared to Trump’s 2017 China trip. Reuters reported that executives from major US companies including Nvidia, Apple, Boeing and Qualcomm were among those considered for the delegation.
While Musk’s name has circulated in media discussions linked to the visit, no official delegation list has yet been publicly released.
Trump’s China visit is expected to focus heavily on trade negotiations, technology cooperation, investment discussions and efforts to stabilise US-China economic relations amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and tariff disputes. Officials familiar with the preparations said discussions may include aerospace, agriculture, energy and technology sectors.
The visit will mark Trump’s first official trip to China during his current term and comes at a time when both countries are attempting to manage economic competition while avoiding further escalation in trade and technology conflicts.
Musk remains one of the most influential American business figures with major commercial interests connected to China through Tesla’s Shanghai operations. His business ties with China have frequently drawn attention in both Washington and Beijing due to Tesla’s large manufacturing presence and growing role in the electric vehicle market.
Reuters earlier reported that internal divisions within the Trump administration had led to debates over the size and composition of the CEO delegation accompanying the President to Beijing.
Chinese officials have confirmed preparations for Trump’s visit, while the White House has stated that trade and investment discussions will remain central to the summit agenda.
No official announcement has yet confirmed whether Elon Musk will formally participate in meetings with Chinese leadership during the trip.
