Tourists visiting Malaysia’s Penang during durian season can now book curated travel packages that combine accommodation, orchard tours and premium fruit tastings in a bid to strengthen the state’s growing durian tourism sector.
Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the campaign, which runs until Aug. 31 to coincide with the peak durian harvest season, involves three durian farms in Balik Pulau and 16 hotels located across George Town, Batu Ferringhi, Seberang Jaya and Bertam, The Star newspaper reported.
Wong said the initiative is designed to provide visitors with a more convenient and cost-effective way to experience Penang’s famed durians.
He added that partnerships between hotels and durian farms have enabled operators to offer discounted bundled rates and additional perks, including exclusive tastings, durian buffets and curated orchard experiences.
Penang, especially its town of Balik Pulau, is known for durian orchards, producing some of the finest varieties, including Black Thorn, Musang King, and Ang Heh (Red Prawn), according to Free Malaysia Today.
The durian season in Penang begins in mid-May and lasts until early August.
Primarily grown in tropical countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, durians are distinctive for their large size, strong odor, and thorn-covered rind.
