A total of eighteen passengers from a cruise ship associated with a hantavirus outbreak have reached the United States and are currently under observation at specialized medical facilities located in Nebraska and Atlanta. Sixteen individuals, including one who has tested positive for the virus, were admitted to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Among them, one patient is receiving treatment in a biocontainment unit, while the remaining fifteen are being monitored in a quarantine setting. Health officials have reported that all sixteen individuals in Nebraska are asymptomatic at this time.
Additionally, two passengers were transferred to Emory University in Atlanta for further evaluation and treatment. At least one of these patients is showing symptoms, and both are being monitored in a biocontainment unit. These passengers were evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship following the deaths of three individuals linked to hantavirus since April 11. The virus is generally transmitted through contact with infected rodents, although the World Health Organization has indicated that human-to-human transmission may have occurred on the ship.
Health authorities have reassured the public that the hantavirus poses a low risk and clarified that this outbreak is not comparable to Covid-19.
Reason for Transfer to Emory University
Officials explained that the decision to transfer two passengers to Atlanta was made as part of contingency planning, given that the biocontainment unit in Nebraska lacked the capacity to accommodate all monitored individuals. One of the patients in Atlanta is experiencing symptoms, necessitating further medical evaluation and care.
Doctors in Nebraska have confirmed that all passengers there are asymptomatic, without fever, and in generally good condition, although they are fatigued from travel. Ongoing medical assessments and monitoring are in progress, with officials anticipating that evaluations will continue for several days. They will determine whether the passengers can complete their 42-day monitoring period at home or in medical facilities.
In addition to the eighteen passengers being monitored, nine other individuals across six states in the U.S. are also under observation due to potential exposure related to the cruise ship or an international flight involving a confirmed case.
