New Delhi, May 11: A woman from Assam and her companion were reportedly subjected to molestation, physical assault, and racial slurs by a group of men outside a club in Nehru Place, southeast Delhi.
On Monday, the Delhi Police announced that they have identified four primary suspects involved in this incident, and multiple teams are actively conducting searches to apprehend them.
The incident occurred around 6:30 AM on May 10, near a tea stall adjacent to a hotel in the Nehru Place area.
A distress call regarding the women was received at the Kalkaji police station around 7 AM, prompting local officers to respond quickly to the scene where they found the two women.
According to initial investigations, the women faced derogatory comments and insults from a group of men, which escalated into a physical confrontation, as stated by a senior police official.
The victims reported that while they were enjoying tea outside the hotel, two men began to catcall them. This behavior soon attracted more individuals, leading to a heated argument that turned violent.
One of the complainants claimed she was molested during the altercation, and her clothing was torn. The women also reported that the assailants made racist remarks towards them.
As per the complaint, one of the women was allegedly struck with a bamboo stick while they attempted to leave the area.
The assailants reportedly obstructed their exit and threatened them with repercussions if they reported the incident.
After police arrived, both women were taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for a medical examination.
A case was filed at the Kalkaji Police Station on May 10, invoking several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of causing hurt, assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, stalking, and common intention.
“The investigation commenced immediately,” the officer noted.
As part of the inquiry, police reviewed CCTV footage from the vicinity and interviewed several witnesses and bystanders present during the incident.
During the investigation, eight individuals, including witnesses and passersby, were detained for questioning, leading to the identification of four main suspects, according to police reports.
Authorities mentioned that multiple police teams have been established, and raids are ongoing at various locations associated with the suspects.
The victims indicated to investigators that they would recognize the assailants if they were presented to them.
As of the time of this report, no arrests had been made.
