New Delhi: Stand-up comedian Sunil Pal’s appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show has triggered a debate online with many calling his jokes “outdated”. Some even felt that he was “insulted” during the segment. Now, he opened up about what went behind-the-scenes on YouTuber Suraj Kumar’s podcast and alleged that his jokes were edited out.

Comedian Sunil Pal revealed that he was not informed that Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahabadia will be also a part of the episode. He further said, “I had no idea if Samay would be there. I was told that the episode will have stand-up comedians, and they might be there too. I was also told to come and do a stand-up segment there, not even an interview. I had even prepared a 15-minute-long sketch, and the director Anukul even finalised it. After I reached there, I got to know that these two were also there. I didn’t get a chance to perform my standup act. They even cut out a few of my jokes.”

He alleged that he was cornered on the show and people were “purposely not laughing” on his jokes but gave “extreme reactions to Samay’s smallest joke”.

He also pointed out that Navjot Singh Siddhu and Archana Puran Singh’s reactions added to the feeling that the episode was planned a certain way.

He added, “Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has been listening to comedians for 20 years, reacted to a small joke from Samay, saying, ‘Too good, you are the next Kapil.’ Even Archana was not laughing at those jokes; she is someone who, if paid, will also laugh at the wind. But if she didn’t laugh, didn’t you feel there was some planning?”

He also said that several “vulgar gestures and abusive words” were used during the taping were removed before the episode went on air. He also believes that the segment may have been “pre-planned”.

The controversy erupted after Sunil Pal criticised Samay Rana and called him a “terrorist” following the India’s Got Latent row. During the episode, Samay expressed his disappointment that Sunil didn’t supported him during the controversy while Kapil joked about Sunil’s jokes. Meanwhile, the episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show is currently streaming on Netflix.
