digital desk- In Bengaluru, cyber criminals have adopted a new and dangerous method of fraud which has given sleepless nights to the security agencies. A reputed businessman here received a ‘digital marriage card’ (wedding invitation) on WhatsApp. As soon as the businessman opened the file, thinking it was a general invitation, the ground slipped beneath his feet. He had no idea that just one click was going to cost him his entire life’s earnings. This single click cleared Rs 5 crore from his bank account in no time.

How was the web of digital fraud woven?

According to the information, the businessman had received a message from an unknown number, in which a file was attached. It was written in the message that this was an invitation letter for the wedding of someone close to him and he must come to the program. As soon as the businessman clicked on that file (which was a dangerous APK file), a ‘malware’ i.e. spying software was secretly installed in his phone. This software started sending complete control of his phone and all personal information directly to the hackers’ servers.

Rs 5 crore wasted through remote access

Through this malware, hackers had gained remote access to the businessman’s phone screen and messaging system. By the time the businessman started receiving messages about deducting money from the bank, it was too late. Hackers had stolen confidential information to his bank account such as password and access to digital wallet. Not only this, the criminals also forwarded the OTP to themselves so that the bank does not get suspicious. By doing the transaction in installments, the criminals transferred a total of Rs 5 crore to different fake accounts.

Warning and identification of cyber experts

Cyber experts say that nowadays criminals are sending wedding cards or government notifications in the form of APK files instead of PDF. This is an Android application file which, when opened, installs an unwanted app in the phone. This app can record your bank details, passwords and even your private calls and messages. Its biggest identity is that .apk is always written at the end of such a file. If any such file comes, do not open it even by mistake.
