John Worboys was found guilty in 2009 of 19 criminal offences involving 12 victims.
In 2019, Worboys received a life sentence with a minimum term of six years after additional victims emerged, to which he pleaded guilty. The black cab driver would present women in his taxi with champagne after claiming he had scooped the lottery or substantial winnings at casinos.
However, the beverages were laced with drugs that left the women incapacitated, enabling him to rape or sexually assault his victims. Now,ITV has unveiled a deeply disturbing new drama entitled Believe Me, which draws upon the testimonies of some of his victims and exposes how the police failed them throughout the investigations.
During Monday's instalment of Good Morning Britain (May 11), Susanna Reid and Ed Balls sat down with Becki Houlston, who suspects she was amongst the women that Worboys drugged prior to his conviction.
The incident occurred back in 2002 in Bournemouth following a night out for Becki. Yet it wasn't until years afterwards that she began to suspect something may have taken place that evening after witnessing Worboys' trial on the news, reports the Mirror.
She informed Susanna and Ed that Worboys' cab in Dorset stood out, as all of the taxis at that time in Bournemouth were yellow, though he explained to Becki he both operated and resided in the two locations.
Becki added: "He is so premeditated, from the minute you get in the cab, he is already grooming you for what he has in mind for you. You just want to get home safely, so he is on the story from the minute you get in the cab.
"For me, it was because he had had a big win at the casino, and he wanted to celebrate, but he couldn't celebrate because he was driving the cab. It's identical to all the women's stories I've seen on the drama series."
Susanna then pointed out that, as Worboys had been unable to celebrate his supposed 'win', he had encouraged Becki to have a glass of champagne.
She replied: "That's putting it mildly, encouraging, he is manipulative, he makes you feel so guilty for not celebrating." Becki went on to reveal that Worboys kept her engaged in constant conversation throughout the entire journey.
Describing the drink as 'bitter and warm', Becki disclosed that it became apparent she wasn't consuming it quickly enough for his liking, and he began delaying her paying the fare in order to keep her inside the vehicle.
She added: "My last memory, that I know is solid, this only came to light when I did my police interview, was I recall, why was he sat in the passenger side of the cab? That was on the pavement side of where we were parked up."
Becki explained that she has no recollection of what took place between her final memory of Worboys and waking up the following day, when she noticed the plastic cup sitting beside the kitchen sink.
In 2008, upon seeing the media coverage surrounding the black cab rapist, Becki realised it was Worboys, as the story was identical. Becki remains uncertain as to whether Worboys ever gained entry to her flat, admitting she has spent years wondering if he worked out which one she lived in and what key would get him inside.
Acknowledging the possibility that she may have been assaulted, she responded: "I try to hold onto the fact that the cup in the kitchen tells me that I probably got home and I didn't feel ill the next day, that's another distinguishing factor for me."
Reflecting on the ITV documentary, Becki said: "There were so many moments in that that mirror exactly and identically my experience as well. I thought the actor (Daniel Mays) did a phenomenal job of playing him. I learnt a lot more about the case as well, which I was unaware of, which has been really helpful to me."
Despite this, Becki told Susanna and Ed that she harbours deep concerns that his wider offending outside London has never been fully acknowledged.
Believe Me is available to watch on ITVX. Good Morning Britain is available to watch on ITV weekdays from 6am.
