PM Modi’s work-from-home appeal: Why the PM wants Indians to work remotely again

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest push for work-from-home practices is not driven by a health emergency like the Covid-19 pandemic years. Instead, the appeal has been framed as an economic and national-interest measure aimed at reducing fuel consumption amid growing global uncertainty and tensions in West Asia.

Addressing a gathering, Modi stressed the need for citizens to act responsibly during a period of international instability and conserve critical resources.

“In this time of global crisis, we have to make a resolution keeping duty paramount and fulfil it with complete dedication,” he said. “A big resolution is to use petrol and diesel sparingly. We must curb our use of petrol and diesel.”

The government’s renewed emphasis on remote work and virtual meetings is aimed at reducing daily commuting, especially in major urban centres, thereby lowering fuel demand. Modi also encouraged people to rely more on metro services and public transport, while suggesting carpooling whenever private vehicles are necessary.

The Prime Minister’s remarks extended beyond workplace habits and touched upon broader lifestyle spending patterns. He urged citizens to avoid non-essential foreign travel, overseas vacations and destination weddings for at least a year in order to conserve India’s foreign exchange reserves.

“The growing culture of weddings abroad, travelling abroad, and vacationing abroad is becoming prevalent among the middle class. We must decide that during this time of crisis, we should postpone travelling abroad for at least a year,” he said.

Modi also appealed to people to temporarily avoid unnecessary gold purchases and instead support locally manufactured products as part of a broader effort to strengthen the domestic economy during a period of global volatility.
