Indian Railways is replacing its older ICF coaches with modern LHB coaches. The primary objective behind this initiative is to enhance passenger safety and minimize the extent of damage caused during train accidents. The Railways maintains that the technologically advanced LHB coaches are not only safer but also offer passengers a more comfortable travel experience.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the current rail network comprises approximately 75,000 coaches, a fleet that includes both ICF and LHB coaches. ICF coaches feature an older design; during accidents, these coaches were prone to telescoping—one coach climbing onto another—which resulted in significant loss of life and property. In contrast, LHB coaches are equipped with an "anti-climbing system" that prevents coaches from mounting one another during a collision. Consequently, the severity of damage in major accidents has begun to decrease.
**Key Features of LHB Coaches**
Another distinct feature of LHB coaches is their superior resistance to corrosion, as they are constructed using stainless steel. Furthermore, these coaches are fitted with an advanced suspension system and a modern braking mechanism, ensuring greater stability and control even at high speeds. As a result, passengers experience fewer jerks and vibrations, making for a much more comfortable journey.
**51,833 LHB Coaches Produced**
Indian Railways began manufacturing LHB coaches exclusively at its production units starting in April 2018. As of March 31, 2026, a total of 51,833 LHB coaches have been produced across the country. Additionally, 1,556 older ICF rakes (train sets) have already been successfully converted to the LHB standard.
**Additional Amenities and Upgrades**
The Railways is not merely replacing coaches; it is also placing increased focus on introducing state-of-the-art trains such as the 'Vande Bharat' series. These trains are equipped with modern amenities and safety features, including the 'Kavach' safety system, automatic plug doors, CCTV cameras, and fire detection systems. Currently, 162 Vande Bharat Chair Car services and 2 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are operational across the country. Railway officials state that, in the coming times, the expansion of new technologies will continue steadily to make the Indian railway network even safer, faster, and more modern.
