Bengaluru: Karnataka Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa on Sunday announced that a bilingual education policy will be implemented in all schools across the state from next year.

Speaking at the release event of the Kannada-translated book Shudra Rebellion by Kancha Ilaiah at the Kannada Sahitya Parishat hall in Chamarajapet, Bengaluru, the minister said both Kannada and English are important for students.

Bangarappa said he had faced criticism after announcing the introduction of English-medium education in government schools.

“When I announced English-medium classes in government schools, some people criticised me and called me anti-Kannada. I did not worry about it. I am not against Kannada. Kannada will always get first priority, but learning English is also necessary,” he said.

The minister also spoke about the importance of education in achieving social justice.

He said SSLC and PUC examination results were better this year and added that the government had taken strict steps to prevent malpractice during exams.

“Students who pass by copying in exams cannot succeed in life. Education is necessary to become knowledgeable. We speak about social justice and we are trying to implement it through education,” Bangarappa said.
