Those travelling within India must be prepared for seven days of weather disturbances, as the latest warning from the predicts that there will be thunderstorms, rainfall, hailstorm, and heat waves in several areas of the country.
In the northern hills of India, which include Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the region of Jammu & Kashmir, travellers can expect scattered rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and even hailstorm at times over the next few days. The popular tourist places in these areas can experience temporary travel disruptions due to slippery roads in mountains and disrupted sightseeing tours. Travellers heading for high-altitude places should keep themselves informed about weather warnings, considering strong winds and rainfall expected from May 11 to 14.
Rainfall and thunderstormsThis weather condition is also bound to affect travel through the northwestern plains, where cities in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi can expect light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and winds of up to 60 kmph.
At the same time, the northeastern part of India will continue to see considerable rainfall activity till at least May 16. Areas like Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh will likely face intense rainfall and thunderstorms. Routes leading through hills and roads towards tourist attractions can witness landslides and localised flooding. Tourists who plan to travel to the northeast region will have to consider possible weather disruptions.
For eastern parts of India, forecasts predict the occurrence of thunderstorms along with gusty winds in areas of Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of West Bengal. In addition to that, there will be heavy rainfall in sub-Himalayan areas of West Bengal and Sikkim, which are popular destinations for travellers who wish to have cool summers in these regions.
Southern states of India will also be impacted by the widespread phenomenon of thunderstorms during the period. Places in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh will likely witness occasional rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds. Popular tourist destinations in Kerala and Lakshadweep in the west coast area of southern India might expect sporadic heavy rains, which may disrupt ferry services.
Heatwave alertDespite the rain, heat will still be a significant issue in western India. Heat wave-like conditions will occur in several parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and western Madhya Pradesh over the next couple of days. Barmer in Rajasthan was reported to register a high of 46.8°C on May 10, putting it among the hottest regions in the country. The above conditions can make sightseeing in the day extremely exhausting and even dangerous for tourists, particularly those undertaking road trips.
A low-pressure region will reportedly form in the southwest Bay of Bengal in the coming days, which might further boost the occurrence of rains in southern and eastern India.
For holidaymakers, the next few days will call for more flexibility in planning their trips and keeping an eye out for weather news. It is recommended to check their flights and train tickets ahead of time, avoid unnecessary travel during storm warnings, pack necessities like rainwear, extra water and other fluids, and even carry medication. Tourists going to the mountains are also advised not to venture into landslide-prone areas during heavy rainfall.
