
Friends, you must have heard the word MLA many times, which is colloquially called ‘MLA’. It is a dream for people associated with politics to achieve this post. Before contesting elections, every interested candidate should know some important eligibility conditions and constitutional rules, let us know about the rules to this –
MLA is an elected representative who becomes a member of the state assembly and plays an important role in making laws and running governance at the state level.
According to the Constitution of India, to become an MLA, one must be at least 25 years of age.
Under Article 173 of the Indian Constitution, no person below 25 years of age is eligible to contest assembly elections.
It is also mandatory for the candidate to be a citizen of India.
Apart from this, the person must also be registered as a voter in any constituency of the concerned state.
For candidates contesting Legislative Council elections, the minimum age requirement is 30 years.
Interestingly, there is no mandatory educational qualification prescribed to become an MLA in India.
The tenure of an MLA is usually fixed for 5 years, unless the assembly is dissolved earlier.
A parliamentary committee had suggested reducing the minimum age limit for becoming an MLA from 25 years to 18 or 21 years, but according to the official rule this limit still remains 25 years.
