Blessings of elderly BJP worker

According to reports, the Prime Minister took the blessings of 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the most senior BJP workers of West Bengal, on the stage. Makhanlal Sarkar is considered one of the early grassroots activists of the nationalist movement in post-independence India. In 1952, he participated with Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in the movement to hoist the tricolor in Kashmir, due to which he was also arrested. After the formation of the BJP in 1980, he was appointed organizational coordinator for West Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling districts. Within a year, he was instrumental in adding around 10,000 new members to the party. He served as district president for seven consecutive years from 1981, which was considered a major achievement at the time, as BJP leaders generally did not hold any one organizational post for more than two years.
