Shiv Shankar Savita- The recent cabinet expansion of the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh is not just an administrative reshuffle, but it is a deep political chessboard woven for the 2027 assembly elections. The inclusion of Krishna Paswan in this expansion is being considered a masterstroke by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. By making Krishna Paswan, a four-time MLA and emerging from grassroots struggle, a minister, BJP has tried to find a solution to the opposition’s ‘PDA’ (Backward, Dalit, Minority) formula. Krishna Paswan’s political journey has been extremely inspiring. He started his public life as an Anganwadi worker and on the basis of his hard work reached the Assembly four times. His biggest strength is that he belongs to the Paswan (Dusadh) community. The vote bank of this community plays a decisive role in many districts of Purvanchal and Central Uttar Pradesh. By making her a minister, BJP has not only given a direct message to this big vote bank, but has also honored her loyalty to the organization by giving a place to an experienced and combative female face in the cabinet.

Strong attack on opposition’s ‘PDA’ strategy

Keeping in view the upcoming 2027 elections, the appointment of Krishna Paswan directly challenges the way Samajwadi Party and Congress are working on the strategy to win over Dalits and backward classes in their fold. Political analysts believe that BJP has taken this step so that the Dalit vote bank which is disintegrating after the weakening of Mayawati, can be linked with ‘Kamal’. By giving a big responsibility to Krishna Paswan, BJP has tried to prove that it is serious about the empowerment of Dalits and it has leaders from every section.

Possible benefits for BJP in 2027

By making Krishna Paswan a minister, BJP is expected to get benefits at many levels in the electoral field. First, it will strengthen the BJP’s position in areas of central UP and Purvanchal where opposition parties had made gains in the last elections. Second, her presence as a symbol of women empowerment will further strengthen the BJP’s hold among the ‘half the population’. Third, by using his influence in the Paswan community, BJP can dismantle the caste equations of the opposition alliance.
