Russia has accused Ukraine of violating a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on Sunday, while Ukrainian officials reported casualties from ongoing Russian drone and artillery strikes.
The ceasefire was intended to last three days, coinciding with Russia's Victory Day celebrations. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that one individual died and several others sustained injuries due to Russian attacks over the past 24 hours. Conversely, Russian officials reported injuries in the Kherson region from Ukrainian shelling, further escalating tensions in the conflict. Accusations of Ceasefire Violations Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed that Ukraine committed over 1,000 ceasefire violations, according to state media reports. The ministry alleged that Ukrainian forces targeted civilian areas in several Russian regions and executed strikes against military positions along the front lines. The military stated that it 'responded in kind' to these violations, indicating a retaliatory approach. Ukrainian officials, however, refrained from directly accusing Russia of breaching the ceasefire but noted that attacks had continued.
Casualties and Damage Reports Ivan Fedorov, head of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, reported that one person was killed and three others injured from drone and artillery strikes attributed to Russia. In addition, Oleksandr Prokudin, head of Ukraine's Kherson region, indicated that seven individuals were injured during this period. Furthermore, a Russian drone attack resulted in damage to a nine-story apartment building in Kharkiv, injuring five people, as reported by Oleh Syniehubov, the regional administration head. U.S. Involvement and Diplomatic Efforts U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that both Russia and Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire from Saturday through Monday, aligning with Russia's Victory Day observance. Trump also mentioned a potential prisoner exchange, suggesting this ceasefire could mark a significant turning point in the conflict. In a related remark, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy jested that Ukrainian strikes would be temporarily restricted over Red Square to facilitate the Russian parade, a comment the Kremlin dismissed as 'silly.'
Future Negotiations Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov expressed anticipation for a visit from U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, both key figures in the negotiations to resolve the conflict. Ushakov emphasized that Russia would not waver from its demand for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the eastern Donbas region, stating, 'Until (Ukraine) takes that step, we can hold several more rounds, dozens of rounds (of negotiations), but we'll be stuck in the same place.'
