Hydrangeas could die without one easy fix this summer. The popular flower brings bright blooms to your garden which you'll no doubt want to keep looking their best for as long as possible.
It's easy to overlook some simple jobs that could make a huge difference, but Ideal Home has shared some tricks you won't want to forget about. May is the perfect time to take control of your flowers and get them on track for the warmer months.
- New HMRC tax-free Personal Allowance limit confirmed - started in April
- UK weather maps show 9 hours of snow on Wednesday - temperatures plunge to 0C
Ideal Home says you need to prune your hydrangeas this summer - but make sure to be cautious.
It's easy to make a mistake when pruning your flowers as pruning the wrong variety could accidentally take away this year's flowerheads.
You should make sure to identify the species you have before pruning.
Chris Bonnett, plant expert and founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk, told Ideal Home: "Some hydrangeas, such as panicles or smooth hydrangeas, can benefit from a light prune at this time of year because they bloom from new wood, so there's less chance you'll snip the bud.
"Gently shaping the plant and removing any old branches will help keep it healthy and well-structured."
Chris says it's best to focus on the three Ds - "dead, damaged and diseased wood" - rather than hard, regenerative pruning.
By following this simple tip, you can ensure your hydrangeas will be in good shape for a strong summer.
But this is not the only job you can undertake.
It might sound obvious, but how you water them could also make a huge difference.
Hydrangeas are thirsty plants, and in May, a steady watering regime becomes more important than ever.
Watering should be "at the top of your to-do list", Julian Palphramand, head of plants at British Garden Centres tells Ideal Home.
You should also make sure to mulch around the base of your shrubs and to feed them the right ingredients.
Your hydrangeas will have perfect blooms by following these easy tips early on in summer.
