Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka relations

Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka have an old relationship dating back to 2000 years. Both the countries have been exchanging trade and culture for the last 2 thousand years. About 18 percent of Sri Lanka’s population is Tamil-speaking.

The two countries are spiritually connected through the religious sites of Ramayana era Ram Setu, Ashoka Vatika and Sita Amman Temple. Besides, pearls, spices and precious stones were traded to Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu through Kaveripatnam and Nagapatnam ports.

Controversy over Kachathivu Island

Vijay Thalapathy’s victory has created some uneasiness in Sri Lankan politics. Last year, Tamil fishermen were attacked in Kachathivu Island. On which Vijay Thalapati expressed his anger and demanded that the island be taken back by India to the central government. There was a lot of resentment in Sri Lanka due to this. Now that Thalapathy Vijay has come to power, international level controversy may erupt once again.

End of Dravidian politics

Along with Vijay, nine cabinet ministers have also taken oath of office and secrecy. For the last 6 decades, DMK and AIADMK were coming to power alternately in Tamil Nadu. The supremacy of these parties has been overturned by actor Vijay Joseph. This has now brought an end to Dravidian politics in the state of Tamil Nadu.
