Janet Jackson shares peace message at Grammy Hall of Fame honour

Janet Jackson delivered a message of peace and unity as her landmark album Rhythm Nation 1814 was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame at a gala held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

The 59-year-old artist took the stage during the ceremony on May 8, reflecting on the enduring relevance of the 1989 project, which remains one of the most influential pop albums of its era.

She was introduced by longtime collaborator Jimmy Jam before addressing the audience.

“Though I don’t see ‘Rhythm Nation’ as a phenomenon that lives in the past, I believe it’s alive and well in 2026,” Jackson said. “‘Rhythm Nation’ still resonates on a deep and profound level. It’s an ongoing force that fights bigotry and promotes understanding. It cannot be stopped. It’s simply too strong and too positive.”

She described the album as a movement that “transcends all borders, nationalities and faiths,” adding that her hope remains for a world free of fear and division.

“More than ever, my hope is that we might live in a world free of fear and despair,” she said.

Jackson continued, “The prayer driving this ‘Rhythm Nation’ remains the same, exactly the same, that peace prevails. Peace the world over, peace among nations, peace in our neighborhoods, peace in our homes.”

The gala honoured 14 recordings in total and featured live performances by Heart and Norah Jones, alongside acceptance speeches from artists and their families.

Released in 1989, Rhythm Nation 1814 cemented Jackson’s status as a global pop force, blending socially conscious themes with genre-defining pop and R&B production that continues to influence artists decades later.
