The impact of these two shows was so deep that when they used to air on TV, there would be silence on the streets and people would sit in front of the screen with their entire families.
The incident of Draupadi’s disrobing shown in Mahabharat is still considered one of the most talked about scenes in Indian television history. Actress Roopa Ganguly played the role of Draupadi in this serial, who made this role very impressive with her strong acting and gained recognition in every household.
According to the director of this serial, Ravi Chopra, special preparations were made to make this scene look real and grand. In the scene of Draupadi’s disrobing, a 250 meter long silk saree was used, which was specially prepared to make the effect of the scene more dramatic and realistic.
This saree was ordered from Chennai’s famous textile company Binny & Company, which was known for its crepe silk clothes at that time. The company’s sarees were very popular at weddings and special occasions in the 70s and 80s.
It is said that at that time the price of a normal crepe silk saree was around Rs 450 to 750. In such a situation, the cost of this special 250 meter long saree had reached approximately Rs 34 thousand, which was considered a huge amount at that time.
