New Delhi: Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan starred as the Gujarat Titans (GT) produced an impressive all-round effort to thrash the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 77 runs and climb to the 2nd spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Saturday, May 09. In the absence of regular skipper Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal led RR, but failed to inspire the team to victory in his first game as captain.
Gill slammed a brilliant 84-run knock to help Gujarat Titans post a strong total of 229 runs on the board before Rashid’s 4-wicket haul helped the visitors defend the target successfully to register a thumping victory against RR at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. GT moved to the second spot on the IPL 2026 points table with the convincing victory.
Asked to bat first in the game, GT got off to a strong start courtesy of a 118-run stand between openers Gill and Sai Sudharsan. Skipper Gill scored 84, while Sudharsan slammed 55 off 36 deliveries as the duo continued their prolific run in the tournament. The GT openers recorded their 9th 100-plus stand in the IPL to go 2nd on the elite list of batters with most 100-plus partnerships in the tournament’s history.
Their 118-run stand set up the stage for a big total before the likes of Washington Sundar (34 off 20) and Rahul Tewatia (14 off 4) played impactful cameos to power the team to 229/4 in 20 overs. Gill looked set to clinch his first ton in the IPL 2026, but missed out closely as he was sent back on 84 off 44 after getting caught off the bowling of Brijesh Sharma. The GT skipper smashed 9 fours and three sixes en route to his terrific knock.
Rashid’s 4-fer helps GT bundle out RR for 152Rashid Khan bagged a four-wicket haul to help the Gujarat Titans skittle out the Rajasthan Royals for a paltry 152 runs in their 230-run chase at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Rashid derailed RR’s chase after Kagiso Rabada struck early to dismiss Jaiswal cheaply on 3, and Mohammed Siraj got Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after his quickfire 36 off 16.
Rashid ran through RR’s middle order, weaving magic with his spin. The Afghanistan spinner picked up the crucial wickets of Dhruv Jurel, Donovan Ferreira, Shubham Dubey and Ravindra Jadeja to finish with excellent figures of 4/33. He was well supported by Jason Holder and Kagiso Rabada, who also bowled brilliant spells.
Holder finished with figures of 3/12 off his 2.3 overs, while Rabada bagged two wickets in his spell to clinch the Purple Cap by extending his tally to 18 wickets in 11 matches so far this season. The exceptional bowling effort helped GT secure a thumping win and go 2nd with 14 points after 11 matches in IPL 2026.
