New Delhi: Gujarat Titans (GT) openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan continued their prolific run with the bat in their side’s clash against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Saturday, May 09. Gill and Sudharsan shared a brilliant 118-run stand for the first wicket to equal Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle’s record.

Asked to bat first, Gill and Sudharsan combined to get GT off to a strong start in the Powerplay at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. After an 11-ball from the first over from RR pacer Jofra Archer, where he conceded 18 runs, Gill and Sudharsan scored 64 runs off the next five overs to help GT finish with 82/0 in the Powerplay, their joint-highest in the IPL.

The duo went on to notch up their respective half-centuries en route to their 118-run opening stand, which came off just 65 deliveries. The partnership was broken when Yash Raj Punja dismissed Sudharsan on 55 off 36 balls in the 11th over to draw the first blood for RR. The GT opener was caught by Archer on the boundary rope at long-on.

Gill-Sudharsan equal Kohli-Gayle’s record

Gill and Sudharsan equalled Kohli and Gayle on the elite list of most 100-run partnerships for any wicket in the history of the IPL. Their 118-run stand against RR was the ninth 110-plus partnership between the duo, which helped them go on level terms with Gayle and Kohli, who also shared 9 100-plus stands for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Overall, Kohli and his former RCB teammate AB de Villiers hold the record for the most 100-plus partnerships for any wicket in the IPL. Kohli and De Villiers shared ten 100-plus stands in the IPl during their time together at RCB. Gill and Sudharsan need only two more 100-plus stands between them to break the record held by Kohli and De Villiers.

Most centuries stands in the IPL for any wicket:

10 – Virat Kohli & AB de Villiers (RCB)

9 – Virat Kohli & Chris Gayle (RCB)

9 – Sai Sudharsan & Shubman Gill (GT)*
