New Delhi: India successfully carried out the flight-test of an advanced Agni missile fitted with a Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle system, according to the government. The missile was launched on Friday from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast. Officials said the missile carried multiple payloads that targeted different locations across a large area in the Indian Ocean Region.

The government said several ground-based and ship-based tracking stations monitored the missile throughout the mission. “Flight data confirmed that all mission objectives were met during the trial,” the governement said.

The test demonstratedIndia’s ability to strike several strategic targets using a single missile system. MIRV technology allows one missile to carry multiple warheads and deliver them to different targets independently. The capability is considered a major advancement in long-range strategic warfare and missile deterrence systems.

The missile was developed by laboratories under the Defence Research and Development Organisation with support from Indian industry partners. Senior DRDO scientists and personnel from the Indian Army were present during the test.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army and industry partners after the successful trial. Singh said the achievement would add “an incredible capability” to India’s defence preparedness at a time of evolving security threats and regional challenges. The successful missile test comes as India continues to strengthen indigenous defence production and modernise its military systems under its strategic defence expansion plans.
