The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted a test of the Agni MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle) intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). This significant event took place on Friday near the coast of Odisha, specifically at Chandipur. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to release a statement regarding this test soon. The successful trial has generated considerable interest surrounding the Agni-6 missile, a project that DRDO has been diligently working on for some time.
Last month, DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat mentioned that the missile program is awaiting government approval, and the agency has completed all necessary preparations. Speaking at the National Security Summit 2.0, Kamat stated, "It is the government's decision. We are ready as soon as we receive the government's approval."
Agni-6 Missile's Capabilities
The Agni-6 missile is anticipated to have a striking range between 6,000 and 10,000 kilometers. Its primary goal is to enhance India's long-range missile arsenal and strengthen the country's nuclear deterrent amid global uncertainties. The missile is expected to utilize MIRV technology, allowing it to carry multiple nuclear warheads and target various locations simultaneously.
Successful Testing of Indigenous Glide Weapon System
In a related development, the indigenous glide weapon system underwent its first successful test on Friday off the coast of Odisha. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) system has been developed to convert unguided warheads into precision-guided munitions. This system was designed and developed in collaboration with the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad and DRDO. Its aim is to enhance the striking capability and accuracy of low-cost weapons for neutralizing ground targets.
Minister Singh congratulated DRDO and RCI for this successful test, noting that this is the first glide weapon utilizing advanced low-cost systems. The development of this kit has been carried out in partnership with Development and Production Partners (DCPP) and other Indian industries, which have already commenced production activities.
