8th pay commission

8th Pay Commission: The eyes of lakhs of central government employees are now completely fixed on the 8th Pay Commission. If the recent demands of employee organizations are accepted, then there can be a big jump in the salaries of peons working in government offices to IAS officers holding top positions. It is being estimated that the minimum basic salary which is currently Rs 18,000, can go beyond Rs 69,000 under the new system. Let us understand this entire mathematics in detail.

What is the 3.83 fitment factor at play?

Recently, an important meeting of the staff side of the National Council (JCM) was held in New Delhi between 28th and 30th April. A big demand has been placed before the government in this meeting. The employees have a clear argument that in view of the rapidly increasing inflation and the exorbitant cost of living in metropolitan cities, the existing salary structure is now proving inadequate. Therefore, there is a need for a reform in the pay structure.

At the center of this entire change is the 'fitment factor'. If understood in simple language, this is the formula on the basis of which the new basic salary of any government employee is decided. You will remember that in the 7th Pay Commission it was fixed at 2.57. Now the employee organizations are strongly demanding from the government that this fitment factor should be increased to 3.83 in the 8th Pay Commission. If the government approves this figure, then the current minimum basic salary of Rs 18,000 will jump to around Rs 68,940. The special thing is that not only the serving employees will get the benefit of this, but there will also be a huge increase in the pension of the retired employees, because the pension is directly linked to the basic pay.

From peon to clerk... how much will be the increase?

If the formula of 3.83 is agreed upon, then there will be a huge increase in the salary as per the pay level. Let's start with Level 1, which includes posts like peon and attendant. Their current basic pay will directly increase from Rs 18,000 to around Rs 69,000. Similarly, the salary of Lower Division Clerk (Level 2) will jump from Rs 19,900 to around Rs 76,000.

If we talk about constables and skilled employees (Level 3), their basic pay may increase from Rs 21,700 to Rs 83,000 and that of Junior Clerk or Grade D Stenographer (Level 4) may increase from Rs 25,500 to around Rs 97,000. This is no less than a jackpot even for mid-level employees. While the salary of Level-6 can go from Rs 35,400 to Rs 1.35 lakh, the basic pay of Level-7 officers is expected to increase from Rs 44,900 to Rs 1.72 lakh.

How much will the salary of senior officers increase?

This bumper increase in salary will not be limited to the lower level only. The salary of senior officers and top bureaucracy (like IAS officers) will also reach a new level. For example, the salary of Level-13 officers can increase from Rs 1.23 lakh to Rs 4.71 lakh and the salary of the topmost post i.e. Level-18 can directly increase from Rs 2.50 lakh to Rs 9.57 lakh.
