On Friday, Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal at 11 AM. This significant decision was made during a crucial meeting of newly elected BJP legislators in Kolkata, attended by senior party figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Adhikari's ascension to the chief ministerial role follows a substantial victory for the BJP in the state assembly elections, which notably included his high-profile win against TMC chief Mamata Banerjee in Bhawanipur.
Five Ministers Sworn in Alongside Adhikari
Alongside Suvendu Adhikari, five other ministers also took their oaths. BJP leader Khudiram Tudu was sworn in as a minister in the West Bengal government. Similarly, Ashok Kirtania, another BJP leader, also took the oath of office. Dilip Ghosh, yet another prominent BJP figure, was sworn in as a minister. Additionally, Agnimitra Paul, a BJP leader, also took the ministerial oath.
Prime Minister Modi Honors Veteran Leader
In an emotional moment, Prime Minister Modi honored one of the senior-most BJP workers in West Bengal, Makhanlal Sarkar, and sought his blessings. Sarkar was arrested in 1952 during the movement to hoist the Indian flag alongside Syama Prasad Mukherjee in Kashmir. At the age of 98, he is recognized as one of the early grassroots leaders associated with the nationalist movement in post-independence India.
