Beneath the lights of Suzhou, a generation of Indian footballers carved their names into history.

With fearless attacking football, relentless energy and a maturity far beyond their years, India’s Young Tigresses stormed into the quarter-finals of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2026 after a commanding 4-0 victory over Lebanon in their final Group B fixture at the Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre Pitch 8 on Friday.

For a team that arrived at the tournament carrying the weight of two decades without a win or even a goal in the competition, this was not merely a victory. It was a breakthrough.

Pritika Barman led the charge with a brilliant brace, while Alva Devi Senjam and Joya added goals of their own as India recorded their first victory and first goals at the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup since 2005. More significantly, it sealed India’s first-ever qualification to the knockout stage of the tournament.

It also marked India’s first appearance in the knockout stage of any AFC competition since the men’s AFC U16 Championship in 2018, where the Blue Colts reached the quarter-finals. In women’s football, it is India’s first Asian-level knockout qualification since the AFC U19 Women’s Championship in 2004.

Now, standing between India and an unprecedented FIFA World Cup qualification on merit are hosts China. The Young Tigresses will face the Group A winners in the quarter-final at the Suzhou Sports Centre Stadium on Monday, May 11, with a place at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 at stake.

Knowing that only a victory would keep their hopes alive, India entered the contest with urgency written into every movement. Head coach Bibiano Fernandes made just one change to the starting lineup, bringing in Anushka Kumari in place of Pearl Fernandes, but the intent remained unmistakably aggressive.

The breakthrough arrived almost immediately.

In the seventh minute, Divyani Linda launched a long diagonal ball from right-back towards Pritika Barman. The winger’s first touch killed the ball instantly before she twisted away from Lebanon defender Joya Bou Assaf with remarkable composure. What followed was pure instinct, a fierce left-footed strike that flew beyond goalkeeper Marie Joe Chebly and into the net.

The celebrations carried more than just joy. They carried relief, belief, and perhaps the realisation that history was suddenly within reach.

The goal transformed India into a side playing with freedom. Their pressing became sharper, their passing more confident, and their attacks increasingly fluid. Lebanon struggled to cope with India’s movement in wide areas as the midfield dictated transitions with intelligence and calmness.

Anushka Kumari nearly doubled the lead soon after when she found space inside the box, only for Marie to produce a sharp save. Pritika continued tormenting the Lebanese backline and came close to adding another in the 16th minute, but once again the goalkeeper denied her.

India’s second goal, however, felt inevitable.

In the 36th minute, Redima Devi Chingkhamayum threaded a precise pass into the path of Alva Devi Senjam near the edge of the area. The forward accelerated past Gianna Frangieh with authority before calmly slotting the ball beyond the advancing goalkeeper to hand India a deserved 2-0 lead heading into half-time.

Even with history inching closer, the Young Tigresses refused to retreat after the break.

They continued to dominate possession, pinning Lebanon deep inside their own half and attacking with confidence through both flanks. Every Indian forward move carried purpose, and every challenge reflected a side unwilling to let the opportunity slip away.

The defining moment of the second half arrived in the 72nd minute through substitute Joya.

Collecting the ball on the left wing, she glided past defenders with dazzling close control before cutting inside and curling a sublime right-footed strike into the far corner. It was a goal worthy of the occasion, fearless, expressive and full of conviction.

By then, the Indian bench was already on its feet. The crowd sensed it too. Something extraordinary was unfolding.

Five minutes from full-time, Pritika delivered the final flourish. Bursting forward from the right wing, she drove unchallenged into the penalty area before calmly placing her finish beyond Marie to complete her brace and seal a famous 4-0 triumph.

As the final whistle echoed across Suzhou, Indian players collapsed to the turf in celebration and disbelief. Coaches embraced on the touchline. Smiles turned into tears.

For 21 years, India had waited for another victory at this level. On Friday night, the Young Tigresses did far more than end that wait.

They announced themselves to Asia.
